OK. I got into Gnome and then dconf editor - made the changes you said - 
but didn't see a 'save' option...so just closed [have NO idea if they 
were saved]. Now I'm in fallback and the panels look the way I had 
changed them to look [not the default black]. So don't know yet if this 
will again now not work when I'm back in....will try soon and report. 
Listed were many more than 4 panels and I only have 4 on three screens.
