I have a similar problem with a Samsung smart phone in Ubuntu Studio 14.04. I don't use Nautilus, but I can copy files in Thunar file manager from the device connected in MTP mode to local hard drive. However, I can not open the same (source) files for reading by e.g. VLC. In terminal I can cd to the directory under /run/user/ and ls there and see I have is rw access, but I can not even copy the files by cp: cannot open <filename> for reading: Operation not supported
