Thanks for the responses.  I've just installed the Gstreamer version
(sudo apt-get install totem-gstreamer) and it works fine.  No issues
anymore with this flavor.  Is there anything that i need to worry about
by using gstreamer instead of xine?  If not, then I'm all set.

doesn't mean that the new version of the distribution has better
