I'm having a similar problem in Trusty, but Gnome has been saving me for now as it's the only option that works at login. After logging into Unity all I get is the wallpaper and cursor.
It started while running 14.10 and the machine simply shut down while I was on Steam. I've searched a bit and other people with the same issue said it came up after upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10. I had updated for a while with no issues. They've mentioned something related to plymouth and graphics. By now I've reinstalled Ubuntu a few times with no luck. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/795901 Title: Cannot log into Unity, Gnome.
