Under the "Edit" menu item, there was no "Preferences" item.

I think this is my misunderstanding over the new Gnome 3 UI layout. I
still think it's terribly unintuitive, but it seems only the
"Preferences" item has been moved to the "top menu", which I thought was
just the name of the program and not a separate menu. All other menus
appear to still be in the normal Gedit menu bar.
