Subbing to this bug even though the direct cause is not the same; with metacity crashing now, my entire session is being lost! I’ve been able to trigger it while alt-tabbing like the OP, closing windows, and generally interacting with the window manager while a 3d game is open or VLC has been in use has caused it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1535906
