Found the following CLI commands on an Internet blog with a similar
issue. The missing menus are restored and they survive rebooting.
However, make certain that any unsaved data in open desktop applications
(Libreoffice, gedit, etc.) are saved prior to executing as this process
can close active applications running without warning.:

     dconf  reset -f /org/compiz
     setsid unity

After three reboots, all seems to be functioning normally just as it was
prior to receiving the Software Updater updates that corrupted the menu
settings.
