That said, if you maximize a window then there is a reasonable argument
that the status of "maximized" should stay true no matter the resolution
of the output, and especially since they are so similar in resolution.
It's a matter of opinion as to whether a maximized window should retain
its maximized status when it's also forced to resize to fit the new
resolution.

So...

1. Please report the bug to the Gnome people and see what they say. If
they agree to keep it open then we will too:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

2. As a workaround, try:
   (a) Keeping the window smaller; or
   (b) Keeping the window full screen (F11); or
   (c) Simulate the Nvidia case by logging into "Ubuntu" instead of "Ubuntu on 
Wayland".
