Thanks. I've just noticed that gnome-shell sometimes seems to place the cursor slightly offscreen by a couple of pixels. This works fine on my machine, but it's possible your graphics driver can't handle a negative cursor position, so you only see it in the last position that was positive (a few pixels away from the edge).
