Sounds like a good workaround. That's what the Randr fractional scaling
patch is *meant* to do.

I think you can hack/script those same settings with:

  xrandr --fb WIDTHxHEIGHT

or

  xrandr --output OUTPUT --scale-from WIDTHxHEIGHT
