This is a false alarm, at least partly. If username is defined like sftp://u...@some.server.org, everything works OK. It is likely that in the live USB test case the server I use checks username from LDAP. As I did not specify user name and the default "ubuntu" was used, connection got denied. On another test server I did get the user/password window even when I did not specify username as above.
