and whilst I am on, I upgraded from edgy to feisty and removed the .gnome* and .gconf* directories, in an attempt fix something else. Somewhere during the course of this (playing with xorg.conf files to get my twinview back) I reverted to US keyboard. I fixed the xorg.conf and reset my linux console keyboard with:
dpkg-reconfigure -plow console-setup But this was not picked up by gnome.
