Same problem here, with an internal ATAPI CD writer.
cdrecord at the command line works, although i have to specify dev=/dev/hdd 
even for a -scanbus option, otherwise cdrecord fails to locate the CD writer 
drive. Apparently i have no SCSI support in the kernel, no "scsi"string to be 
found in dmesg, no "sg"module loaded.

i am attaching the output of lshal. Search for the string 5VO212 and it'll take 
you to the CD writer.
i have not included a "hal debug output" since it involves disconnecting and 
reconnecting the device, and this is not an external device which can be 
disconnected easily.
i fail to see how to attach more than one file here.
