No, I was not trying to manually add an X11 session for GNOME. I am running XFCE (Xubuntu) as my desktop environment, not GNOME. GDM3 was my display manager and was working previously. After an unclean shutdown (accidental keypress during keyboard cleaning), GDM3 stopped working entirely — it accepts the password but immediately shows "Authentication Error" and freezes. LightDM works fine as a workaround and launches my XFCE session correctly. My session in ~/.dmrc is set to xubuntu, not any GNOME session. The GNOME Shell crashes visible in the logs are from GDM3's own greeter process, not from me trying to log into a GNOME session. Is GDM3 on Ubuntu 25.10 expected to work with XFCE/Xubuntu sessions, or is it only supported with GNOME/Wayland now?
