Public bug reported:
I am experiencing a persistent issue with thumbnail generation and display in
Ubuntu 24.04.
In the Files application (Nautilus), thumbnails for images, videos, and other
supported file types are either not shown or appear inconsistently. In some
cases, thumbnails are not generated automatically even after opening folders
multiple times or waiting for cache regeneration.
Steps already taken:
• Thumbnail display is enabled in Nautilus settings
• gsettings org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers disable-all = false
• gsettings org.gnome.nautilus.preferences show-image-thumbnails = always
• Thumbnail cache cleared (rm -rf ~/.cache/thumbnails)
• Installed thumbnailers such as ffmpegthumbnailer
• System fully updated (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS)
Additional checks / logs:
1. Thumbnail generator test:
gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer test image produces output file successfully
This indicates the thumbnailer backend works correctly.
2. Installed thumbnailers:
dpkg -l | grep thumbnailer
ffmpegthumbnailer is installed and available at /usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer
3. GNOME settings:
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers disable-all
false
gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences show-image-thumbnails
'always'
Expected behavior:
Thumbnails should be generated consistently and displayed immediately (or
shortly after first folder access) for supported file types.
Actual behavior:
Thumbnails are missing, partially generated, or appear only after long delays
or repeated folder openings. Behavior is inconsistent across folders.
System:
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
GNOME Desktop
Files (Nautilus)
