Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 26.04 (Wayland), windows don't keep their stacking order after switching to another workspace and back. A terminal and Nautilus window that were in front of an editor, such as GNOME Text Editor or Obsidian, end up behind it.
Steps to reproduce: 1. On workspace 1, open an editor window (GNOME Text Editor or Obsidian), then a terminal and a Nautilus window in front of it. 2. Switch to an empty workspace 2. 3. Switch back to workspace 1. Expected: the terminal and Nautilus window are still in front of the editor. Actual: they are now behind the editor. Version: mutter 50.1-0ubuntu2.4, gnome-shell 50.1-0ubuntu1.2 This is fixed upstream by mutter merge request !4992, "Fix erroneous stack order changes on workspace switches" (commits 04bc846e and a676249c), which closes upstream issue #4398. The fix was released in mutter 50.3 (gnome-50 branch) and 51.0. Please consider cherry-picking it into the resolute mutter package.
