Public bug reported:

System
Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, gnome-shell 50.1-0ubuntu1.3, mutter [version], Wayland
session
Kernel 7.0.0-38-generic, AMD Radeon 780M (amdgpu)
External ASUS PB287Q (4K) through a Dell WD19TB Thunderbolt dock (DP-MST)
What happens

When the external monitor wakes from standby (after screen lock or
suspend) and the kernel fails to bring the MST link back (amdgpu reports
Failed to get ACT; separate kernel bug), mutter's atomic commits start
failing with EINVAL. After about 30–90 seconds, gnome-shell aborts on an
assertion, which ends the user session and loses open windows.

This was never seen on Ubuntu 24.04 (GNOME 46) with the same hardware.

Expected

Even if the kernel can't light up the monitor, mutter should treat the
failed commit or monitor as unavailable and keep running, not abort the
whole session.

Frequency

4 crashes with the same signature between 7 and 12 Oct (12:52 and 16:49
on 7 Oct, 13:04 and 15:48 on 8 Oct), plus another on 12 Oct at 11:25.
Crash reports were submitted via apport/whoopsie.
