Public bug reported: I using Ubuntu 24.04. it has similar behavior in bug reports:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1721428 (17.10) - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2050865 (22.04) As far I could test mine: Gnome-Shell crash happens when disconnecting or disabling 2nd monitor (external, HDMI) with below conditions: - Ubuntu dock active on all windows - There is at-least one program that initially opened in secondary Monitor (or that will be shut), which its window never visited/moved to main monitor. (gnome-shell-extension-tiling-assistant is disabled) While some answers in AskUbuntu suggests disabling Ubuntu Dock, worked just fine with only Gnome-Shell. There are others, All Options below worked for me too: - Switch to another TTY console before disconnecting the external monitor.
