So, I have been doing some testing. I don't think it has anything to do with totem anymore. I have seen the same behavior when running screensavers, games and other times when there is some graphics work being done. I now think it is either my X configuration, the video card drivers or maybe the card itself.
I am using linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-386 and nvidia-glx-new (same thing happens with nvidia-glx). I am attaching my xorg.conf and my X log file if anyone can can see anything wrong with it. I recently added BusID "PCI;1:0:0" to the file and that has made a difference. It doesn't happen as frequently anymore but playing frozen-bubble or running any screensaver will still cause the same behavior.
