The icons for categories in the applications menu are back, which I think was the major annoyance. You can get other icons back by changing the setting about icons in menus. FWIW, I started a thread on the usability mailing list in August to get opinions on whether this change made sense or not in the gnome-panel context since I wasn't convinced a complete removal made sense.
