EDS only is a dumb data store. Using it to aggregate data from different sources is quite a pain. Today we guys implementing Maemo5's address book deeply regret having tried that on top of EDS. EDS just is not made for aggregating data. In opposition to that a meta data store like Tracker would provide quite natural access to features like aggregating contacts and presence information.
