IRC tends to be exclusive though. If your working hours does not allow you to be at the meetings then you are excluded from discussion - it's not a case with ml which you can read when you have free time. I am not sure in what TZ the meating take place but I guess lots of potential contributors are excluded from start simply because it takes place say at 4 am in their timezone or at 14 pm when they are at work. PS. That's also was probably said a few times.
