I'm trying something different now - tablet layout + click on button
triggers single button mapping window.

No, it's mainly for OLED screens.

I.e. Pen icon instead of "P" for gimp, "window + arrow" icon instead of
Alt+Tab and so on.

That's far away from my current coding experience, but the feature is an
absolute life saver in my everyday work (windows unfortunately)

I wasn't aware of that, but I saw something similar in wacom settings
mockups.
