I'm guessing the password popup is app modal (bad), which is preventing you from cancelling the beta popup. I've a vague recollection that there's a gconf key that will stop the beta popup from appearing, but I don't know what it is off-hand, you'll have to poke around in gconf-editor (or the evolution code) and see if you can find it. What happens if you Cancel the password popup? Does it just reappear immediately?
