 Hmm   ,     I  created a new account  and moved my datafiles across  to the 
new account,
preserving  all the ACL's    I did not copy the GNOME  configuration files and 
let them all 
be recreated. 

   After  this  the gnome-apperance-properties  work a lot better and I have 
been able 
to activate and deactivate  Compiz.

  One reason  could be  that earlier versions  of Compiz  had been installed  
on the 
account  and  that the Gnome config files  vere "contaminated" . This happened 
because I  preserve  my  /export/home   filesystems when I install a new  
Nevada Build.
