One small point - make sure to put the entry SystemMenu=True under the 
[greeter] section in /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf and all will be well. I 
had no entries in my custom.conf  file except the sections and so wasn't 
entirely sure where to put it under [security], [gui], [greeter] ....
