If I use most other fonts as the default font in Firefox's preferences, I can
print a page with no real issues, but if I choose Helvetica, the page comes out
scrambled - characters are all over the page, the font is heavily bitmapped,
baselines are all over the place, letters are placed atop one another, etc.

This really surprises me given how common Helvetica is.

Is this a known issue?
