The +auto_master entry instructs the auto mounter to read it from nis 
instead, and it is missing from there. I know I can override this by 
moving the line above the +auto_master, but I think it is a workaround 
and not fixing the real problem.

This is what I suspect as well, and this is what I would call the root 
problem of what I'm seeing. Why on earth would I like to monitor the 
home directories for everyone else just because I wanted to look at the 
content in one of my folders...
