Thanks for the pointer! That workaround lets me bring up packagemanager. I also have the same problem with starting 'gedit' under pfexec, so it's not specific to packagemanager.
Once you use the workaround, a dbus session is started for root, and that seems to be used by subsequent programs even when you don't unset the DBUS variable.
