Problems like these are bugs that should be fixed; not legitimate 
reasons to resist change.  The pkg(5) team has just recently put back 
improvements that cuts down install time to a few seconds on many 
systems for the single package case you just mention.

The system is also still under heavy development, so warts such as these 
are expected.  I would encourage to you to continue to look at new 
releases of the pkg(5) system and provide constructive feedback where 
you feel there are shortcomings.

Finally, I disagree that pkg(5) is not "a whole more functional than 
pkgget".  You haven't dug very deeply if you believe that.
