Sorry, that part is nonsense of course :) The latest Solaris Express builds still use the JDS-style Launch menu as well, so the patches to implement it are up-to-date. So I guess it should actually be relatively painless to build that version of gnome-panel and drop it in to an OpenSolaris environment if you have to.
