Just tried to upgrade Lightning 0.7 to 0.9 on my box here for Thunderbird 2.0.0.16. I go to Tools->add-ons, right click on ligntning 0.7 and select Find update. After installing the update and restarting Thunderbird, 0.9 is there. You could also download the add-on from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313, go to Tools->add-ons->install button, and choose the xpi file to install manually.
