Kill off gdm by hitting ctrl + alt + backspace killing it about 5  
times until the service suspends, then login, rm -r .gnome* .gconf* in  
your home directory to clear out gnome's settings.  This is a driver  
issue, I believe with Intel cards and the included driver.
