I have yet to see Sun Studio 12 provide better performance than modern
GCC on modern Xeon/Opteron systems. Every once in a while I see it be
as fast, but usually it is slower and sometimes considerably slower.
Sun Studio produces much faster code on SPARC.

On the flip site, Sun Studio is much better integrated with Solaris.
The tools are nice and they actually work. It seems that the GNU folks
have turned their nose up at Solaris. I can't use GDB to debug my
programs and GCC 4.3 required using GNU ld and produced objects with
slightly different symbol requirements so I ended up having to revert
from it.
