This is not the point. I could also edit the package and change
the basedir, the package map, or whatever else is necessary.

Any and all third party software landing on my systems should be
contained in a package.  Any software deployment based on tarballs
shows that someone somewhere failed to do a job properly.

Just my paranoid opinion. :-)
