Bill, you could try logging into console mode, and disabling the gdm
service. Then edit /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf and set "Enable=true"
in the "[debug]" section. Then try running the /usr/sbin/gdm process
as the root user by hand. I'd also try running gdm with the "-nodaemon"
argument, since you might get more useful error/debug messages echoed
back to the terminal.
With debug enabled, you should then find debug messages in syslog
(/var/adm/messages), which may help to figure out the problem.
However, if the icon cache update failed, then there might be some
setup steps that failed which are causing GTK+ based programs to not
work properly in general. It might be good to run
/usr/bin/gtk-update-icon-cache by hand and see if that helps.
