Here's some more information.  After the sound disappears, I can log out of the
desktop, and then through a remote session unload the audiohd driver.  Then,
when I log in to the desktop again, the sound has returned.  These are the 
messages
that appear when I log in:

As well, muting the volume from the gnome-volume-control application also causes
the sound to disappear permanently.  I'm suspecting the driver now.
