We have been removing "JDS" and "Java Desktop System" strings from the
programs in the desktop. Marketing has decided to de-emphasise the
"JDS" naming. But aside from some string changes, this won't change
the way Sun ships the desktop at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by "clean" GNOME. All distros patch GNOME to
some degree or another. Sun patches GNOME to address Sun specific
issues, to brand the desktop with Sun logos and theming, to set up
the most reasonable program default preferences for Solaris, and to
provide Sun specific functionality (such as Trusted JDS).

Sun will obviously continue to patch GNOME as needed to ship a desktop
that works as best as possible on Solaris. That said, we do work hard
to get our patches upstream, where appropriate.

I'd say that the GNOME that Sun ships has always been pretty "clean".
