Support for all components (not just desktop) of any OpenSolaris
distribution (e.g. Belenix, Nexenta, Solaris Express Developer Edition,
Shillix...) are usually arranged with the distribution's vendor. For
example, Sun offers support options for Solaris Express Developer
Edition which includes a GNOME based JDS desktop.

I don't think there is anything preventing someone from creating an
OpenSolaris distribution with a default KDE desktop and supporting it
for others who would like the same thing even if Sun chooses not to. I
would suggest moving the KDE project from a "hidden" project to a public
project to make collaboration easier for any others who prefer KDE and
would like to contribute. It also seems that there are fewer religious
debates and more collaboration between the KDE and GNOME communities in
recent years so you're likely to get valuable input from those who
prefer GNOME. You may have already discussed the advantages and
disadvantages of creating a hidden opensolaris project, but I just
thought I'd add my opinion.
