[desktop-discuss] Blank login GUI with snv_117

I just did a live upgrade from snv_116 to snv_117.  After the reboot, the 
familar
login GUI appeared, but all of its boxes and menus were blank.  It didn't echo 
my
user name, and didn't respond to my password.  On a remote login, I was able to
disable the CDE login GUI and enable the gdm GUI.  After that, I was able to log
in successfully and get my usual desktop.  What happened?
