Do you have any icons on your desktop, or just not those ones? IIRC there was/is an issue with recent dev builds that can cause nautilus to fail to start (and continually respawn in an attempt to do so), which would result in no desktop icons being shown until it succeeded. Off-hand, though, I forget if that was in 116, 117 or both.
