This is a brand new Sun Ultra 24 workstation with nothing installed
except OpenSolaris 2005 08, postgres, jdk6 and netbeans. I know the
hard drive is not full. I don't think it is a failing disk either
because this computer has been reliable until I installed OpenSolaris
2008 05. It didn't do that with Indiana Preview 2, but I didn't have
Compiz turned on then.

I tried booting into single-user mode, same problem.

The weird thing is last time this happened (a week or so ago) the
problem went away by itself. One day it just started working again and
I was able to use the computer for almost a week before it happened
again. Same symptoms as last time: gray screen and mouse pointer when
logging into gnome, and mouse pointer.

I'll try Gilles' suggestion of uninstalling compiz package(s). If that
helps, then I will install an older version of compiz and see if the
problem persists. If I can't get it to work I'll re-install the OS and
either leave compiz disabled, or downgrade it to see if it helps.

Thanks,
Ryan
