Several times now I have tried to associate an application with an
image file type. Thus far I have been entirely unsuccessful.

Let's say that I want to add support for SMPTE DPX. Under
preferances, I select File Associations. I use the "Edit file type"
dialog and enter

Description: SMPTE DPX Image
MIME type: image/x-dpx
Category: Images
Filename extension: dpx
Actions: gm display

All seems good. So I go click on a file and it says that there is no
association for the file and would I like to add one. When I go to do
so, I see that the MIME type is application/x-dpx, category Misc, and
extension 'dpx'. So (already feeling a sense of defeat) I fill out
this dialog using the MIME type it guessed, and it says that there is
already a definition and would I like to override it. So I say yes
and close the dialog. I click on my file again and I get the exact
same dialog that there is no association.

I have tried this for several file types already but there is still no
love. The computer seems to have a mind of its own and does not
submit to the will of its attendant human.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Bob
