This is probably a good idea. However, this year might not be a good time to propose work in this area. It seems the GNOME community is planning to move towards DConf. I am not sure if DConf will resolve these issues you describe, but it might make more sense to see how the community evolves in this area before trying to address these problems. http://live.gnome.org/dconf Brian
