Yeah, I don't think the release notes have yet been published, since GNOME 2.16
is still in beta. I was provided since it'll definitely exist in the future [not
so helpful for reviews though].

Currently this is all done through HAL, the hardware abstraction layer, that
provides a similar API like this. HAL is part of PSARC 2005/399 Tamarack:
Removable Media Enhancements in Solaris, which you'll hopefully start to see
glimpses of in the next couple of ON builds.
