This was done in GNOME 2.26 when PulseAudio was integrated with gnome-volume-control: http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.26/#rnusers.volume https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/VolumeControl#User_Experience Note that on Solaris, we do not ship the PulseAudio gnome-volume-control, but instead ship the GStreamer one. However, it also now uses the same new design. Feel free to raise this issue in a bug at bugzilla.gnome.org in the category gnome-control-center if you would like the GNOME community to rethink this.
