It sounds like GDM is failing to manage the display after you logout.
GDM is the program responsible for showing the login screen.  Bob
suggests you check the /var/log/gdm logs.  This is where GDM will save
it's Xserver log output.  This is useful to check.  If there are any
obvious errors about why the Xserver might be failing to restart,
the errors might be in this file.

Also, you could edit your /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf file and set
"Enable=true" in the "[debug]" section, and then restart GDM by
running "gdm-restart" as root.  After doing this, GDM will spew extra
debug log output to your /var/adm/messages file.  When the problem
next happens, I'd review the output and see if there is any useful
information about what might be failing.  You can share the log output
with me and I'd be happy to help review it also.
