Hi Brian,

There's still something amiss here. As an experiment, (with Thunderbird
shut down) I deleted my ~/.thunderbird/user-profile/mimeTypes.rdf file,
and started Thunderbird. I went to a message with a WAV attachment, and
in the dialog, I selected "Open with Totem (default)", and "Do this
automatically..." After this, there is never a dialog upon opening that
attachment, the Thunderbird default actions menu is blank, and there is
also a nonempty mimeTypes.rdf file in place of the one I just deleted.

Now, suppose I want to change the "open with" application. No problem.
I'll just save the attachment, and in Nautilus, go to "Properties" in
the right-click menu, and change the setting in the "Open With" tab. In
my case, I changed the default to "/opt/csw/bin/mplayer", and now, from
Nautilus, the saved attachment opens with mplayer. However,
double-clicking the attachment within Thunderbird still launches Totem.
(Restarting Thunderbird doesn't help.) Other than deleting
mimeTypes.rdf, I don't know how to change that association.
