Thanks much for your help. It seem I could fix my problem.

When I invoked gconftool, I got the following error in stdout.

(gconftool-2:18321): GConf-WARNING **: [ApocSource] Source 
apoc:readonly:mandatory@ is unavailable: Failed: [ApocPapi] Cannot initialise 
PAPI: PAPI
Connection Failure.

After I modified my /etc/gconf/2/path in snv_92 + vermillion_93, I could launch 
contact-lookup-applet.
