Yep, I think that would be in order. There're a lot of unresolved
issues with vbox-on-(open)solaris AFAIAC, speaking from a user
perspective. The vbox mailing list seems to have very few people using
OpenSolaris hosts and the forums are quiet on the issues I've
experienced.

Sure, here's a copy'n'paste from my vbox list posts:

Hi All,

tried to setup HIN today, but ran into the following problems:

When executing (as root) /opt/VirtualBox/vnic_setup.sh 0:1:4a:f2:31:34
I am told this:

Invalid link name: LINK

When I do /opt/VirtualBox/vnic_setup.sh 0:1:4a:f2:31:34 vnic900 I am
told this:

vnic900

Afterwards, ifconfig -a shows no change.

Of course, since no new interface was created, vnic_term.sh doesn't
work either:

/opt/VirtualBox/vnic_term.sh vnic900
ifconfig: unplumb: SIOCGLIFFLAGS: vnic900: no such interface
dladm_name2info: object not found

And not specifying the vnic name, produces this:

/opt/csw/bin/sudo /opt/VirtualBox/vnic_term.sh
Missing VNIC interface name.

Short of setting everything up by hand, can anyone suggest why this may
not be working as it should (as per the user manual)?

Thanks!

Hakim

And more importantly right now for me, concerning shared folders:

        shared folders broken

Hi All!

I've posted this before when I was still running 1.6.0. Lately I
upgraded to 1.6.2 and reinstalled the guest additions to make sure
everything is up to date.

I am using an OpenSolaris host, build 86, on an MSI laptop with Intel
Core Duo, plenty of RAM, a fast hard disk drive and Intel 945 graphics
chipset.

My guest is WindowsXP SP3, 768 MB RAM, 64 MB VideoRAM, a 7 GB virtual
drive, ACPI enabled, IO APIC / VT-x / AMD-V / PAE/NX all disabled,
PCnet-Fast III via NAT enabled, and one shared folder, within my home
directory with read-write permissions for all.

Inside the guest, I can connect the shared folder as a network drive.
However:

- all files in there are listed with 0 kb size, both in normal Explorer
view as well as in the properties dialogue of Windows

- as of VBOX 1.6.0 I was still able to start installers and the like
from there, and they would run, as of 1.6.2 that is not possible, I
receive the following message:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access them."

- When I try to copy them to the local virtual drive, I am told "Cannot
copy file: Cannot read from source disk."

(in VBOX 1.6.0 I was still able to copy but the resulting files were
always 0 kb in size).

- I CAN create new files via the right-click dialogue, contrary to
files I put in from the "UNIX side" I can open these, too, and for
example write in a text file. This does not however work for more
involved file types like Corel graphics etc. I CANNOT delete them
afterwards. Again, I am told "Cannot read from source disk."

So, in summary, shared folders are completely unusable at the moment on
an OpenSolaris host with WinXP SP3 guest. At least for me.

This is completely reproducible and I'd love to hear if anyone can
suggest a fix. Without the possibility to use shared folders,
productivity becomes pretty low as I have to divert everything via
network servers to get a local file into the local virtual machine.

The install of WinXP is pretty minimal and the following programs are
installed:

7-zip, Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave Player,
CCleaner, CorelDraw X3, Irfanview, JavaRE, Office 2003, Firefox, NOD32,
O&O Defrag, Revo Uninstaller, Spybot, SuperCopier 2, xVM Guest
Additions, and some Windows updates.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to shed light
on this problem. I've disabled all programmes that may hinder disk
access such as SuperCopier, NOD, etc. but the situation doesn't change.

Thanks for reading,

Hakim

A few digests later, I ran into a guy who also uses an OpenSolaris host
and he had this to say:

Hello Hakim,

I must have missed your original note concerning bridging on
OpenSolaris hosts, but at least we have consistent results. Maybe this
will work in VirtualBox 1.7.

As far as shared folders not working on OpenSolaris hosts, I am sure
that I saw that documented somewhere, but at the last Dallas/Fort Worth
OpenSolaris user group meeting, VirtualBox was the presentation topic,
and it was discussed that shared folders on OpenSolaris host would not
work under VirtualBox 1.62.

So, judging from that, unless it's my particular setup here, neither
bridged networking nor shared folders currently work on OpenSolaris
hosts, basically rendering it a nice but useless virtual machine.

If you have any pointers or info that may help, I'd be very happy to
hear about it.

Best wishes, Hakim
